People & Productivity Symposium
Participants Report Organizational Changes Already!

One hundred fifty Employers Group members attended the People & Productivity Symposium on July 19 at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine. The program was the first of its kind to be offered by Employers Group dealing with increasing organizational performance and productivity through engaging employees. According to participant evaluations and feedback, which continue to come in, the Symposium exceeded expectations.

The statewide Symposium, held to coincide with Employers Group’s 110th Anniversary, drew a crowd from seasoned executives and operations staff to HR managers and generalists. While the audience was varied, the dynamic speakers spoke to each level and gave them practical guidance on how to not only achieve personal and professional productivity, but how to play a more pivotal role within their organizations.

Feedback from members

Michelle Sawicki, Practice and Education Manager for American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), offered this comment: “This symposium was the “gold standard,” and I look forward to similar options that are equally broad and global. Thanks for the progressive effort to go beyond meeting just the needs of an HR manager.”

Ines Avila the HR Manager at Eagle Labs wrote to us three weeks after the event to say: “My company will no longer be the same after all the great information I learned. In only three weeks I've already initiated some positive culture changes to get everybody highly engaged in their work… and people here are seeing the impact. I've been on fire ever since! Thank you for making this symposium available.”

Another participant, Julianne Miller-Boyer, Employee Benefits Administrator for HPI Racing, who has used Employers Group services and training over the past several years, said, “I always expect EG events to be informative and well presented. This Symposium exceeded my expectations with its broad spectrum of speakers and topics related to productivity. Each speaker had a different “angle of approach” to the subject, all provided solid information that our company can use.”

A photo perspective

Recognition and Awards
Employers Group also recognized member companies during the awards luncheon for their involvement through the years. Special recognition was given to the Los Angeles Times and Chevron for continuing their membership and being a charter member dating back to our founding in 1896! The next oldest members, LA Coca Cola, Whittier Trust and Virco Manufacturing Corp., were recognized for 80+ years of continuous membership! The City of Anaheim received recognition for being the only Employers Group member who was in business longer than we were – since 1857!

Best Workplace competition
St. Mary Medical Center received top honors for Best Workplace. Jason Barker, St. Mary’s CEO, accepted the award and indicated that their organization wants their employees to be the best they can be to benefit the community.

“We are honored and humbled to be recognized with the Best Workplace Award…it is a confirmation that we are doing the right things with our employees,” said Jason. “After all, they, not us, define whether we are successful.”

The Best Workplace finalists, who will each receive a Best Workplace Certificate, include: CA Custom Fruits and Flavors, Inc.; BORM Associates, Inc.; Griswold Controls; Momentum Textiles, Inc.; Shepard Bros, Inc.; Hobby Products International; American Association of Critical Care Nurses; North American Medical Management; Lockheed Federal Credit Union; Sole Technology, Inc.; Western Federal Credit Union, and Virco Manufacturing Corp.

Keynote address from Victoria Bradshaw
They keynote luncheon address was given by California’s Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development, Victoria Bradshaw. As a member of the Governor’s cabinet she gave participants direct insight on workforce issues and how the Schwarzenegger administration is responding to each, as well as the administration’s proactive stance on business issues.

From the start of her presentation, she encouraged questions and participants were not shy in asking her some tough ones on immigration, policy, skilled workers and productivity. The Secretary also advocated the use of a one-of-a-kind California program that is pro-business: state-funded training. She encouraged companies to use this underutilized program to increase employee and employer productivity.

David Hill, HR Director for the City of Anaheim, who was not only attending the symposium, but was also on hand to accept the recognition award on behalf of the City as the EG member in business the longest, offered his take on the event:

“I came back to my organization more committed than ever to reversing the trend to communicate primarily via E-mail and voice mail. I will return to walking around more and having a more personal relationship and impact on my work group.”

North American Medical Management’s Vice President of Human Resources, Patricia Gutierrez, sums up the day very well: “The content of each presentation was very useful and more than I expected. I walked away with new ideas and tools to create a more productive work environment...”

From our perspective
According to Jeffrey Hull, Director of Learning Services, who arranged the event, “This was Employers Group’s purpose in holding the event. While EG is a great resource to help keep you in compliance, we are also a great resource to add to your bottom line—from thought provoking and behavior-changing training programs to special events such as the Symposium.”

Jeff also said to stay tuned and register early for our next big event, the Workplace and Employment Law Update, to be held statewide in September and October.

FAQ

Heat Illness Prevention Regs

Q: What does Cal/OSHA require of employers when the workplace temperature is very hot?

A: “When employees work in hot conditions, employers must take special precautions in order to prevent heat illness. Heat illness can progress to heat stroke and be fatal, especially when emergency treatment is delayed. An effective approach to heat illness is vital to protecting the lives of California workers.

Employers of outdoor workers must comply with the new permanent heat illness prevention standard. This standard requires employers to take four simple steps that include shade, water, training and written procedures. These can greatly reduce the risk of outdoor workers developing heat illness.”

The above is from an advisory notice issued by Cal/OSHA. Although there are no specific rules related to heat for employees working indoors, the employer is always responsible for maintaining a safe and healthful workplace. More information is available at http://www.dir.ca.gov/

Q: Are there any other regulations regarding heat?

A: The wage orders also have general rather than specific requirements for excessive heat. Most of the wage orders state “the temperature in each work area shall provide reasonable comfort consistent with industry standards for the nature of the process and the work performed.” Furthermore, employers must take all feasible means to reduce excessive heat or humidity created by the work process.

Most of the wage orders address lower temperatures by stating that when the nature of the work requires temperatures less than 60º F then a heated room where the temperature is not less than 68º F must be maintained. A minimum temperature of 68º F must also be maintained in bathroom, resting rooms and change rooms.

New! Automated Solution for Form I-9 Employment Verification

As a nationwide provider of background screening services, ScreeningOne, Employers Group’s preferred partner for these services, has launched a new automated solution for Form I-9 compliance services for verifying employees have a legal right to work in the United States.

Provides DHS and SSA verifications
ScreeningOne’s secure, web-based service enables employers to conduct I-9 employment verifications through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Social Security Administration (SSA). Through their direct link with the DHS and SSA, employers are able to verify the accuracy of Social Security and Immigration “A” numbers on newly hired employees and, in real time, can obtain employees’ legal right to work status with a DHS-issued verification number.

Be in I-9 compliance
The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 mandates that U.S. employers verify the employment eligibility status of newly-hired employees and make it unlawful for employers to knowingly hire or continue to employ unauthorized workers.

An employer is subject to both civil and criminal penalties for hiring illegal aliens. Section 274(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and 8 U.S. Code Section 1324(a) make it unlawful for any person to knowingly hire, recruit or refer for a fee any alien not authorized to work. An employer found to violate these laws faces the following penalties:

  • $250 to $2,000 fine for each unauthorized individual;
  • $2,000 to $5,000 for each employee if the employer has previously been in violation; or
  • $3,000 to $10,000 for each individual if the employer was subject to more than one cease and desist order.
  • The employer can also be fined $100 to $1,000 for each individual “paperwork” violation.
  • Criminal penalties for a pattern and practice violation can be up to $3,000 for each unauthorized alien, imprisonment up to six months, or both.

As you can see, noncompliance, whether intentional or caused simply by oversight, may have severe legal and financial consequences imposed by the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the potential of a corporate image tarnished by negative publicity.

For more information on ScreeningOne’s full suite of background screening services, including the new, automated I-9 verification, please contact Katherin Scott at Employers Group at 213.765.3949 or kscott@employersgroup.com.

Upcoming Lunch ‘n Learns

Lunch ‘n Learns are online events geared for you and your HR/supervisory staff to stay ahead of the curve. Sessions are held via webinar from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Get the training you need during your lunch hour in the comfort of your office space.

  • 911 Series: Legal, compliance and other challenging issues on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
  • 411 Series: HR trends, workplace issues and best management practices on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

411 - Controlling Absenteeism
August 24, 2006, 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm
Presented by: Tony Burnham, EG’s Senior VP and Employment Counsel, and Leslie Hollis, EG’s VP of Consulting Services

Learn how to effectively reduce costly employee absenteeism in two proven ways-either reactively or proactively. Reactive or traditional control is achieved through effectively written, implemented and administered hiring procedures, offer letters, position descriptions, employment policies, corrective actions and arbitration procedures. Proactive or non-traditional control is accomplished by engaging employees in a self-interest driven process that motivates employees to want to produce more, better, faster and cheaper results.

The pros and cons of each of these approaches will be thoroughly discussed during the session providing attendees the ability to decide which approach best meets the unique needs of their organization.
